Energy cost is rising faster than ever before, especially gasoline which has triple from the year 2000 to 2008. On average, each American households spend close to $2,000 annually on home energy which totals up to about $200 billion per year for all households. Unless we change our bad energy habits and invest more money on energy efficient appliances, the annual energy consumption in the United States may double within the next decade.

  1. Washer and Dryer - When washing your clothes use warm or cold water to help save energy. It is not unusual to think that most of the energy is being use to spin the washer, but in-reality most of the energy is spent heating the water. Instead of using dryers, use clothesline to dry your clothes to reduce energy consumption. During the winter use the dryer to dry your clothes half way then hang it up to dry, this cuts down on energy and your clothes will dry quicker on the clothesline. Practicing these tips will save you money and your clothes will last longer.
  2. Using Dishwasher - Some people like to rinse their dishes before putting them in the dishwasher but doing this will end up wasting gallons of heated water per day. Instead of rinsing the dishes, just scrape as much leftover food as possible and let the detergent and dishwasher do their job. If you only have a few dishes to wash, washing them by hand will save you more money but do not let the water run too long.
  3. Computers - If you know you are not going to use your computer for a few hours, put it to sleep mode to save energy. Always turn your computer off before you sleep, this can save hundreds of dollars annually and cut down on CO2 levels.
  4. Heating and Cooling - During the winter time, lowering your thermostat 5 to 10 degrees before you sleep can cut your heating bill by as much as 20 percent. When no one is going to be in the house for a few hours or days, turn the thermostat down to a safe level during winter and turn the air conditioner off during the summer.
  5. Shades and Windows - Window shades is a cheap and convenient way to cool your house during the summer. Lowering your shades will make it easier for the air conditioner to do its job. Summer nights are usually cooler, this is the best time to open your windows and let the fresh air cool the house instead of the air conditioner. If the air isn’t cool enough, use fans instead of air conditioning to cut down on energy consumption.
  6. Oven and Microwave - When you need to heat food, use the microwave instead of the oven whenever possible. Microwave uses less energy, heats food faster and produces less heat which is a good thing during the summer.
  7. Cooking With Pans On Oven - Using the right size pan with the right size burner will take less energy to heat the pan. When boiling water or cooking food, cover the pan with a lid to speed up the boiling process and to preserve nutrients.
  8. Refrigerator - Avoid opening the fridge door as much as possible and reduce the amount of hot food in your fridge. Your fridge is one of the top energy consumption appliances in your house, make sure to clean the coils on the back of your fridge to reduce its motor from running below efficiency. Cleaning the coils will help extend the life of your refrigerator.
