Shellfish is a good source of energy because it contains high levels of protein and calories. If it is not for the lack of carbohydrates, shellfish would have been a great source of energy. Carbohydrate is the body’s main source of fuel because it is easier to convert carbohydrate to glucose than to convert protein and fat.
Shellfish such as lobster, shrimp, crab, oysters, mussels, scallops and clams should be avoid as much as possible due to its carcinogenic health hazards. The good things about shellfish is that it is low in fat and cholesterol but many of them contain chemical contaminants (may vary depending on the location) that can make you very sick.
Many shellfish such as oysters and lobsters are scavenger that lives on the ocean floor which is the dirtiest part of the ocean. Everything that gets dump into the ocean including chemicals, waste, dead animals and fishes usually ends up sinking to the bottom of the ocean. Scavengers such as shellfish, lobsters and algae ends up eating these waste and eventually pass the toxic waste to other species that eats it. Take a few seconds and think about what I just said…would you want to eat an animal or fish that feeds on dead carcasses? Some carcasses may be dead for days or weeks and are usually infested with bacteria, viruses and toxic chemicals that can be pass on to whomever eats it.
If you are a person like me who loves seafood, it may be impossible to avoid shellfish because they are the reason why seafood taste so good. If you can not eliminate shellfish from your diet, try to avoid them as much as possible, especially clams, oysters, scallops and mussels. Shellfish that lives around shoreline, such as the beaches near the Gulf of Mexico, consume more chemicals than shellfish that lives near the Atlantic shoreline. The Gulf of Mexico is where the Mississippi River dumps all its waste causing the area to be more toxic than other shorelines. Before eating shellfish at a restaurant, it would be a good idea to talk to the managers to see where they get their shellfish from.
Scavengers are not always bad, in fact, they are essential for life to exist because they clean up toxic waste so other species can survive. Algae is one of the best toxic cleaners of the sea (main source of food for some shellfish) and does an excellent job at it. This is why scientists use them to clean up contaminated lakes. Shellfish that don’t move much such as clams, mussels, oysters and scallops depend heavily on algae for food. This is one of the reasons why shellfish gets a lot of attention when someone dies from “paralytic shellfish poisoning.” Just Google “paralytic shellfish poisoning” and you will get over 80,000 related articles about it.
