White Bread Versus Wheat Bread
Filed Under: Energy Health & Tips
Bread has two main types which are white and wheat, knowing the difference between the two is critical for increasing your energy health. White bread and wheat bread belong to the same family but are actually very different when it comes to their nutritional properties.
White breads - are made from wheat berries, the berries are processed by stripping the bran (the outer layer), the germ (the innermost layer) and leaving only the endosperm which is the starchy part of the berries (the biggest inner layer). The endosperm has the least nutrients, this is where most of the protein and carbohydrates are stored. Removing the bran and germ also removes most of the berry’s nutrients, such as fiber, magnesium, zinc, vitamin B6 and vitamin E. The calories that you get from the endosperm are known as empty calories because it has little or no nutritional value. Because there is little nutrients in white bread, manufacturers are required by law (United States) to enrich white bread with certain amount of vitamins and minerals.
Wheat breads - are made from the same berries but the bran layers are not stripped during the processing stage. The bran layer contains many of the vitamins and minerals, including fiber which has been known to aid digestive health, weight loss, glucose levels, and the removal of toxins in the colon area. The wheat germ is also removed in wheat bread because it becomes rancid quickly. Due to the short shelf-life of wheat germ, government health regulations (United States) require the removal of wheat germs in the berries to prevent health problems. Both breads contain similar chemicals to prolong shelf-life and prevent fungus growth.
Comparing the two breads, wheat bread is the better one for you because it has more nutrients. The fiber found in wheat bread helps slow down the digesting process, therefore keeping your blood sugar level more constant. The result is longer energy and less trip to the refrigerator because your stomach will stay full longer. Even though wheat bread is healthier for you, not all of them are as good as they promised.
How to tell the difference between healthy and unhealthy bread.
- Most white breads are white in color but manufacturers have been known to use caramel or some other ingredients to make the white bread look more like wheat (brown) bread. Because of this, color is not a good way to tell if the bread is good for you.
- If the package reads whole grain or whole wheat, then the bread is the good kind. Ignore packages that contains 100% whole wheat, the 100% has nothing to do with whole wheat.
- If the bread taste more sweet than plain, it is most likely the unhealthy bread.
- Best way to tell if you got the healthier bread is to look at the ingredients on the back of the package. If you see the ingredients, high fructose corn syrup, hydrogenated soybean oil, enriched wheat flour or anything similar, the bread is unhealthy.
How white bread and wheat bread affect your energy level.
- White bread gives you quick energy boost but also gives you energy breakdown because the calories from white bread is mostly empty calories.
- Wheat bread gives you energy endurance, the extra nutrients replenish your body and regulate blood sugar levels so you can stay active longer.
