Negative Calorie Food - Good or Bad

Negative calorie food does not mean that the food has less than zero calories. The reason why it is called negative calorie food is because these foods require more energy to digest than they provide. For example, your body requires an average of 200 calories to digest food each day. Negative calorie food such as carrot contains about 30 calories. Lets say through out the day you only eat 3 carrots which adds up to 90 calories. Subtract the 90 calories from the 200 calories it takes for your body to digest the food and you get negative 110 calories. Most fruits and vegetables are low in calories but high in vitamins and minerals, the low calories is one of the reasons why you don’t feel full long when eating fruits and vegetables.

Negative calorie food can be good or bad depending on how much nutrients it has. Carrot is a example of a good negative calorie food because it is low in calories but also has about 430% DV of vitamin A, 3.6 grams (14% DV) of fiber and 13% DV of vitamin C (nutrition facts are based on 1 cup of chopped carrots). Hostess Twinkies is a example of a bad negative calorie food because it has 150 calories per serving and little nutrients. Twinkies also contains fat which is harder for the body to digest. Most processed food such as Twinkies have preservatives and other chemicals added to prolong their shelf life. Some of these chemicals are toxic to your body and drains your body of energy because your body has to remove the toxins out of your system.

Negative Calorie foods are popular for weight loss because of their low calories, however consuming low calorie foods may increase the desire of wanting to eat more. When going on a negative calorie food diet, avoid the bad negative calorie foods because they will drain your body of nutrients. Also, avoid negative calorie foods that have a lot of simple carbohydrates because your body is more likely to store simple carbohydrates as fat.
