Energy Level: 8/10
5 Hour Energy currently has three energy shot flavors which are Citrus, Berry and Orange. The orange flavor is the newest energy shot from 5 Hour Energy. The first thing I noticed after taking my first gulp of its light-pink energy juice was the energy rush. The energy gave me a head-buzz that woke me right up and peaked for about half an hour. The nice thing about its energy rush was that there were no major side effects. Although, I did experience an increased of heart and breathing rate, and minor stomachaches and headaches. Energy is powered by caffeine, energy blends and lots of B-vitamins. I recommend drinking this dietary supplement drink on a semi-full stomach to reduce the side effects. If you have a sensitive stomach, this drink may make you feel uncomfortable in the abdominal area.
The most noticeable flavor from this energy shot was sweet orange-citrus. 5 Hour Energy Orange had a strong orange-citrus smell and a light burning aftertaste, similar to drinking a weak shot of liquor. This energy shot also had a cough medicine-like aftertaste which made it hard for me to drink. Luckily it was an energy shot instead of an energy drink. This energy shot contained 30 milligrams of niacin (vitamin B3) which may cause hot feeling and skin redness to people who are sensitive to niacin. The skin redness is caused by the increase of blood flow near the skin. 5 Hour energy Orange is also high in caffeine (about the same as a cup of coffee). If you are sensitive to caffeine, you may want to stay away from this supplement drink. 5 Hour Energy Orange contained a lot of synthetic vitamins. I don’t recommend drinking this energy shot on a regular basis.
The pros
- Energy kicks in fast and noticeable over two hours
- Small and easy to carry around
- Low in calories
- No bad crash
The cons
- Energy kicks in fast but disappears quickly
- Has a light-burning aftertaste and is too sweet
- May give minor headaches and stomachaches to people sensitive to caffeine and energy blend
- Contains a lot of B-vitamins for a 2 fl. oz. bottle
- Contains synthetic vitamins and sucralose (artificial sweetener)
- A little on the expensive side
