Atrophy - Enemy Of Energy

In general, atrophy is the partial or complete degeneration of tissues at the cellular level due to malnutrition, nerve damage, diseases and disuse of body parts. When a part of your body is in a state of atrophy, your energy health will suffer due to cell degeneration. Cells are basically the engines of the body, they all work together to keep you strong and healthy.

Three way to reduce atrophy

  1. Avoid becoming a couch potato - when you decrease your workload, your cell will start to decrease in number and size, and your energy will drop dramatically. The cells that are affected the most are muscle and skeletal cells which may lead to muscle loss and osteoporosis. A broken limb is a good example of muscle and bone cell degeneration because the limb is immobilized until the bone is heal. The longer it takes for the bone to heal, the worst the cell degeneration. Another good example of cell degeneration is when a person becomes paralyzed. If the person do not recover from the injury, the affected area can be permanent.
  2. Eat healthy - your cells depend heavily on nutrients to help them work properly. B-vitamins are some of the most important vitamins for cells because they are necessary for normal cell function and energy. Vitamin C is important for protecting your cells from harmful free radicals and is great for the immune system. Being sick can drain your body of energy which is why vitamin C is important for energy health. Avoid processed food, such as fast food and junk food. These types of food are usually high in calories, cholesterol, saturated fat and low in vitamins. Food that are high in cholesterol may lead to atherosclerosis which is when the inner lining of the arteries become harden and narrow. This reduce blood flow which also reduce the amount of nutrients from reaching important organs in the body.
  3. Radiation - causes ionizations in atoms of cells which can cause their DNAs to break. DNA plays a major role in cell health because it contains the necessary code for normal cell function. When a cell’s DNA is damaged, the cell may die, become abnormal or cancerous. To reduce radiation exposure do not stay in direct sunlight for long periods of time and limit the amount of X-ray visits.
