In order to maximize your energy level, you need to supply your body with essential vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, good fats and proteins. Unfortunately, many commercial foods don’t have sufficient amounts of vitamins and minerals because they are usually processed to increase their shelf-life. This is why it is important to eat whole foods, such as whole grains, fruits and vegetables, and unprocessed meat. Whole foods such as organic fruit and vegetable, should be eaten raw as much as possible. Cooking fruits and vegetables will destroy a good portion of their vitamins and minerals which are crucial for energy and health. Unprocessed meat should be cooked before eating to destroy bacteria and other harmful micro-organisms.
Cooking tips to increase energy
- Avoid overwashing fruits and vegetables because it can wash away some of their nutrients.
- Fruits and vegetables should be cooked in water instead of oil. When cooking fruits and vegetables, don’t pre-soak or cook them in cold water. Instead, put them right into the boiling water. If you need to use oil, use only a small amount.
- Always cook food in a pan that has a lid, covering the food while it is being cook will help preserve its nutrients.
- Cook food that is fresh. Food that has been sitting in the refrigerator for a few days will loose some of its nutrients. This is why it is important to buy fresh food at small amounts so you don’t end up storing them for weeks.
- Cook fruits and vegetables that are brilliant in colors. The richness in colors usually mean that they are rich in nutrients.
- Steaming food is a great way to preserve its nutrients. Steaming can preserve twice as much nutrients as boiling and reduces the destruction of water-soluble vitamins.
