Blueberry is one of the fruits with the highest level of antioxidants. Some of its main antioxidants are flavonoids, anthocyanin, phenolic compounds, beta-carotene, ellagic acid, and vitamin C, A and E. Antioxidants are known to help slow down the aging process and protect the body from the negative effects of free radicals. Researchers believe that free radicals are the main cause of premature aging and the break down of DNA, which can lead to cancer and other chronic diseases. For people with heart problems, blueberries have the ability to help lower LDL (bad) cholesterol because they are rich in pectin, a soluble fiber that prevents the body from absorbing fatty substances.
Blueberries are very low in calories. A cup of blueberries has about 80 calories. The low calories make them affective at aiding weight loss. Blueberries are also a popular folk remedy for intestinal flu and diarrhea because of a substance called anythocyanin. Researches have confirmed that anythocyanin has certain antibiotic properties against bacterias that cause diarrhea.
