Alcohol beverages are well known for their carcinogenic effects but consume in moderate levels and they may protect you from certain diseases. The alcohol beverage that is getting a lot of attention for its health benefits is wine, especially red wine. Recent studies have shown that people who drank a glass of wine per day may reduce their risk of stomach and ovarian cancer, ulcers, diabetes, obesity, heart disease and premature aging. In spite of its health benefits, high levels of wine can cause the opposite effects.
The secret ingredient behind the benefits of wine is antioxidants. Wine usually contains high levels of natural chemicals called polyphenols and flavoniods. Polyphenols are known for their antioxidant properties and flavonoids are known for helping the body to eliminate toxins. Even though some studies claimed that wine is good for you, it is important to drink wine in moderate levels because it contains alcohol and other chemicals that may harm your body. Many of the studies claiming that wine is good for you are only concentrating on the healthy substances of wine. Because of this, they do not include the unhealthy substances in their research; therefore, their claims can be misleading.
