Lettuce – Low Calories High Nutrients

Lettuce is like a gift from God for people who are weight conscious because it is full of nutrients and is incredibly low in calories. A cup of green leaf lettuce can have as little as five calories. There are three main types of lettuce, arugula, butterhead and romaine. When buying lettuce look for the ones that is rich in color, the color ranges from light green to reddish brown. The rich color is a sign that the lettuce is healthy and full of antioxidants. Avoid iceberg lettuce as much as possible because it is the least nutritious. Like many vegetables, lettuce has a very short shelf-life and should be eaten within a few days. Lettuce that is rich in color is full of beta-carotene which is a disease fighting nutrient found in many fruits and vegetables. Lettuce is also a good source of vitamin A, C and K, B9 (folic acid) and water. Because of its high levels of antioxidants and nutrients, lettuce is affective at helping the body to fight cancer-causing agents.
