Red Yeast Rice: Cholesterol Fighter
Red yeast rice (also known as xuezhikang extract) is a by-product of yeast (monascus purpureus). According to a study from the American Journal of Cardiology, this red grain may help fight off heart disease. The study shown that people who took red yeast rice after a heart attack had a 45 percent reduced risk of another one. One of the main natural ingredients responsible for fighting off heart disease is an enzyme called lovastatin. This enzyme is believed by scientists to inhibit HMG-CoA reductase which is an enzyme that triggers cholesterol production. Red yeast rice is known as a natural statin and is very popular in Asian countries. The red rice is available as dried grain, wet paste or as fine powder.
Many physicians believe that red yeast rice is a good natural alternative to statin because it doesn’t deplete levels of coenzyme Q10 like statin does. Low levels of coenzyme Q10 can cause fatigue because the compound is essential for energy metabolism. Red yeast rice is usually cheaper than statin and can help users save money. If you are currently taking statin for heart problems and want to switch to red yeast rice, please talk to a physician who is knowledgeable about alternative medicines for heart health before switching.
