Natural Remedies: Disease Fighting Herbs – Part 2
Natural remedies have been used for many centuries to fight off diseases. Since the invention of vaccine and modern medicine, many people is relying less and less on these natural healers. It’s important not to forget about them because some of these herbs contain natural disease resistance components that are not found in modern medicine. Herbs are usually cheaper than modern medicine and many of them can be grown right at home.
Natural remedies and their use
- Echinacea – is very popular for stimulating the immune system to fight off diseases. Many people used the plant to help fight off cold, cough, sore throat, fever, inflammation, urinary infections, and to treat wounds and skin infections. Professional herbalists believe that echinacea is beneficial for treating ear infection, vaginal yeast infection, athlete’s foot and sinusitis because of its hormonal and antiviral effects.
- Eucalyptus – the oil found in this herb is well known for its healing abilities. Many user used the herb to treat wounds, cough, cold, fever, sore throat, asthma, bronchitis and sinusitis. The oil is said to have antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal and anti-inflammatory property. The oil is also popular as room fresheners and for sauna baths. Note: Avoid ingesting the oil, large amounts can result in organ failures and even death.
- Fennel – is full of phytonutrients, studies have shown that the phytonutrients in fennel can reduce inflammation and help prevent the growth of cancer. Fennel is often used to improve kidneys, spleen, lungs, liver, depression, blood pressure, sexual desire and respiratory congestion. Women who are on birth control pills should avoid fennel because of its mild estrogenic effects.
- Fenugreek – gets a lot of attentions when it comes to breast enlargement because of its high levels of diosgenin. The herb is popular for balancing blood sugar levels, increasing sexual desire, treating menopause and slowing the effects of aging. Today fenugreek is being studied for it effects on people who are diabetic. The Egyptians used the herb to reduce fevers and stomach problems.
- Feverfew – is mainly used for reducing fever, migraine, headache and inflammation. The herb may also reduce high blood pressure.
- Garlic – is known for benefiting the heart, numerous studies have shown that regular consumption of garlic can reduce blood pressure and plaque formation. People had used garlic for colds, flu, fevers, coughs, bronchitis and wounds.
- Ginger – is popular for reducing digestive problems and cramps. The herb is traditionally used for motion and morning sickness, colds, migraines, nausea, arthritis, respiratory infections, lowering blood pressure and preventing blood clots.
- Ginkgo – is a herb that is praised by the elders. The herb is believed to increase blood flow, promote longevity and increase sexual desire. The Chinese have used ginkgo for asthma, lung congestion, energy, and for preventing strokes and heart attacks. Some researchers believed that ginkgo can slow down Alzheimer’s but there hasn’t been a conclusive study to back up this claim.
- Ginseng – is popular for helping the body to resist diseases. The herb is used for boosting the immune system, lowering blood sugar and cholesterol levels, reducing stress, enhancing sexual ability and increasing energy. Pregnant women may want to avoid panax ginseng which consists of Korean Ginseng, Chinese Ginseng and North American Ginseng. Panax ginseng contains several steroid compounds that work similar to anabolic steroids which is why it isn’t recommended for pregnant women.
- Golden Seal Root – is known for its anti-inflammatory, antibiotic and astringent properties. The root is used for reducing colds, flu, fevers and other respiratory problems. The herb is also popular for treating ulcers, digestion, constipation, liver and bladder problems.
