The Danger of Cosmetics

CosmeticsThe public spent billions of dollars every year on beauty products but many don’t realize that they are exposing themselves to dangerous chemicals. Federal laws are not specific enough to control what kind of chemicals companies can use for making their skin care products. Because of this, the beauty industry can make up excuses to put certain harmful chemicals in their beauty and skin care products. The truth is, they are more concern about how much profit they can make rather than the health of the consumers. Many of the chemicals found in beauty and skin products have been linked to cancer, infertility, hormone disruption and other chronic diseases. According to the Environmental Working Group, more than 20 percent of all personal care products contain ingredients linked to cancer.

The amounts of chemicals found in skin care products can easily range in the thousands and hundreds are being added each year. Some of the chemicals that health experts are concerned about are: nitrosamine, parabens, lead, phthalates, hydroquinone, neurotoxins, sensitizers, allergens, and 1,4-dioxane (dioxane). These chemicals have been linked to cancer, reproductive and respiratory problems, nervous system disorders and other chronic diseases. Skin and beauty products such as: lip stick, shampoo, soap, nail polish and remover, makeup, fragrance, deodorant, sunscreen, lotion and even baby care product contained some of these harmful chemicals. Teenage girls are usually the ones with the highest risk of being affected with these chemicals. The chemical dioxane is one of the chemicals that you should be familiar with if you have kids or planning to have kids. Dioxane is a byproduct of the ethoxylation process in cosmetics manufacturing and is known to cause cancer in animals. Many baby shampoo products contain dioxane, the chemical is also popular in automotive coolant. Dioxane has also been found in deodorants, toothpastes and mouthwashes.
