The Energy Crisis: 2009 and Beyond

Our society has relied on fossil fuel as the main source of energy for centuries. This dependence of fossil fuel is coming to an end faster than people may think. Relying on fossil fuel is one of the biggest mistakes that we have ever made as human beings. Because of our dependence of fossil fuel, we are destroying the one thing that we need to survive, the Earth. Most fossil fuel takes a long time to renew itself. The way we are managing fossil fuel, it will not last forever. One of the fossil fuels that we are depleting very fast is oil. Many people believe that there is an abundance of oil within the Earth, but the truth is we have already used up most of the oil that is easily accessible. To understand how much oil we have left within the crust of the Earth, we need to understand how oil is made naturally, and the law of supply and demand.
Oil, believe by most researchers as a non-renewable fossil fuel, is made from dead plants and animals that have been heated under enormous pressure within the Earth’s crust. Over millions of years, the heat and pressure transformed these organic matters’ chemical structures into clusters of hydrogen and carbon atoms, known as hydrocarbons (fossil fuels).
According to most researchers, oil can only be created under the right temperature (140° F – 250° F) and the right pressure. The depth required for this pressure is between 7,500 and 15,000 feet. Below 15,000 feet pressures and temperatures are so great that these dead organic matters are broken down into methane gas instead of oil. Any depth higher than 7,500 feet can’t produce oil because there isn’t enough pressure and heat. Although, oil has been found above 7,500 feet, this is possible because of plate tectonics. Over millions of years plate tectonics can move oil, from 7,500 and 15,000 feet, closer to the surface and even above it. (source: Kunstler, J. H., The Long Emergency)
It is true that there is still a lot of oil left within the Earth’s crust but most of it is very hard to get. The oil that is hard to get is sometime referred to as abiotic oil. This type of oil is believed by some oil experts as non-existing because they believe oil cannot be created below 15,000 feet. Oil experts who support the theory behind abiotic oil believe it is created through natural chemical reaction near Earth’s mantle.
The oil that is easily accessible has already reached a critical point, known as the “global oil production peak.” According to many oil experts, global oil production peaked during 2005-2007. From here on, the world’s oil supply is going to fall faster every year. The Hubbert’s model estimated that the world used about 27 billion barrels of oil per year, this estimation is probably higher now. It also estimated that there are about 2,000 billion barrels of oil within the Earth’s crust. We have already used half (1,000 billion barrels) of that, keep in mind that many of the oils are inaccessible. Some of the oils are stored underneath miles of ice, ocean and some are too expensive to pump up to the surface. (source: Kunstler, J. H., The Long Emergency)
Oil corporations don’t like to tell the truth to the public because if the public knows the truth, it will shy investors away from them and they will lose billions of dollars. Its all about the money if you know what I mean. Emerging countries such as India and China, both country combined has more than 2 billion people, are not going to help the oil supply either. With the supply of oil going down and demand rising faster than ever, oil may become expensive very fast and may become scarce within a century. We are already starting to feel the effects of the global oil peak.
Do you remember last year (2008) when the price of gas was around 4 to 5 dollars per gallon in the United States? At just 4 to 5 dollars per gallon, companies were already failing left and right. Imagine if the price goes up to 10 or 20 dollars per gallon. With these prices, the world economy will collapse for sure, even the rich will struggle to make ends meet. When gas prices reach 5 dollars or more, I believed it may happen by the end of this year or in 2010, the cost of many necessities and needs will become unaffordable for most of the public. Worst of all, food will become very expensive which will cause major starvation worldwide. Even Walmart can kiss their low prices goodbye. Because many people in industrialized countries depend on oil too much and are unaware of these problems, they will suffer just as much or more. Industrialized countries will soon know how it is to live in a third world country.
Oil is cheap, powerful, versatile, transportable, easy to store and can be refine into many different products. It also has a well established system through out the world. Because of these features, it will be hard to find alternative energies to replace oil. Wind, solar, nuclear, geothermal, magnetic, tidal and hydrogen power is improving rather quickly, but the main problems are patent issues, money and how fast we can install them through out the world. Installing them isn’t going to be quick and cheap, which is why I don’t think it will help us in our current economy. Our demand for energy is too high for these system to be effective, plus the trillions of dollars needed to install them will cripple the world’s economy. Nuclear and hydrogen is popular among the established energy corporations because of profits, but is dangerous and required energy to process. Wind, tidal, magnetic, solar and geothermal required little or no preliminary energy to harness. Best of all, they are clean and renewable. Solar power is still not efficient enough to replace our energy needs but perfect this technology and we will have an infinite source of energy. Out of these 5 methods, magnetic may be the best solution for our energy crisis because it cost less to harness.
When we look at the big picture, we actually don’t really have an energy crisis. If we can look beyond the illusions established by big energy corporations, we will realize that we already have the necessary technologies to solve the energy crisis. Right now we have technologies that can give us abundance of clean energy, such as cold fusion (non-radioactive). Even better, we have the technology to produce free energy, such as zero-point energy. These technologies have been suppressed and hidden from the public for two main reasons, profit and control. Many people who tried to build these technologies had been manipulated, bought off or may even been killed by the people who control energy. Unless we wake up and stop letting these energy corporations control us, the energy crisis will get out of control and many people will perish.
If you are interested in the new energy movement such as zero-point energy, I highly recommend watching the video below. The host of the video is Dr. Steven Greer. He has a lot of connections with people who work in top-secret government projects and has a ton of information about new energy systems that can help solve our energy crisis.

Hello energy and health fanatics, independent thinkers, truth seekers and freedom lovers! My name is Pao L. Chang and I’m the author/founder of EnergyFanatics.com. Ever since graduating from high school, I noticed that my energy level was not as high as it used to be. While in college, I decided to educate myself about energy, health, wellness, and explore the mystery of alternative medicine and the power of spiritual healing. This journey taught me many things...
u got some major points down. I agree with most of them. But oil prices are going to go way above 10 dolls per gallon. Btw, u just helped me with my school essay. Thnx alot!
Glad I can help!
Thanks for the great information. I’m using this article for my Participation in Government project. Watch your spelling of certain words though. You used “Dependent” in lue of “Dependence” on a few occasions. Read through the article before you post it for all to see? Anyways, thanks
You are welcome! Thanks for the grammar tip.
Hi Mr Chang, it’s me again.
Can you expain to me what magnetic energy is? I’ve never heard of it, and it sounds cool. Thnx
Magnetic energy is the energy created by magnets, also known as electromagnetism. It is important to know that magnetism and electricity are similar forces, one can’t exist without the other. Magnetism is dynamic and electricity is static. If you pass a wire that conducts electricity over the north or south pole of any magnet, electricity is generated within that wire. Magnetic energy can be harnessed in a few different ways. I’m not a science expert in electromagnetism so I don’t have all the answers. One of the ways to generate electricity from magnet is through the use of magnetic motor. I still don’t know exactly how magnetic motor works but I will try to build one someday when I have more free time. Basically, if you arranged magnets in certain ways around a rotor and a shaft. The repelling force of each magnet will rotate the rotor in which the repelling force is less. With the right tools, electricity can be generated cheaply by using this method. The laws behind it is somewhat complicated. If I managed to build one someday, I will write a post on how to build one.
