Bone Health: Truth and Myth

People who live in countries that eat a lot of dairy products have been conditioned to believe that dairy products are essential for bone health and growth. These health claims made by the dairy industries are misleading and their products don’t contribute much to strengthen bones. Remember this slogan “milk it does a body good?” The people who came up with this slogan should be arrested for false advertisement. Cow milk doesn’t do much good for your body. In fact, it does more harm than good. Most of the calcium in cow milk doesn’t get absorbed by the body because it needs assistance from vitamin D and magnesium. The vitamin D in cow milk is usually synthetic and does little to increase the absorption of calcium. This means that when you drink cow milk, most of its calcium passes through your system and goes down the toilet. Because of the dairy industry working closely with politicians, they succeeded at brainwashing most consumers about how dairy products are essential for bone health. The truth is, dairy products contribute little to help keep your bones strong. What dairy products are good for is giving you health problems, such as osteoporosis, heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, allergies, etc. Studies have even linked hormones found in dairy products to breast and prostate cancer.

Eating more dairy products or taking calcium supplements do little to strengthen your bones. Your bones are like muscles, if you don’t use them regularly, they will become weaker. This is why exercising is one of the best ways to strengthen your bones. Combined exercise with organic fruits and vegetables, and you got yourself the magic formula for bone health. Many fruits and vegetables already have enough calcium in them. Plus, the calcium in them are easily absorbed by your body. It is true that calcium does help strengthen bones but you don’t need as much calcium as claimed by the dairy industry. If what the dairy industry said was true, there would be a lot of people with osteoporosis in third world countries. The fact is, countries that depended on dairy products for calcium have more people with osteoporosis than countries that don’t.

Compared to third world countries, industrialized countries don’t exercise as much because they have machines to help them do work. Many of their jobs don’t required them to walk around for long periods of time. The lack of exercise and whole foods in many industrialized countries, especially in the United States, are the main cause of osteoporosis, not the lack of calcium. If it was because of calcium, countries like the United States will have little or no cases of osteoporosis.

To help support the fact that the cause of osteoporosis is from the lack of exercise and not from the lack of calcium, we need to turn our attentions to astronauts. Why do astronauts have to exercise all the time in outer space? It is because outer space has very little or no gravity which makes astronauts weightless. This weightlessness environment causes their bones and muscles to degenerate rapidly. To slow down the degeneration process astronauts have to exercise a lot. Otherwise their bone loss would be so severe that they would not be able to return to Earth.

Remember, most dairy products aren’t designed to strengthen your bone. It is just pure advertisement to make money off of you. So, the next time you stop at the grocery store, pick up some organic fruits and vegetables instead of diary products. This will reduce you and your family’s risk of getting osteoporosis and other chronic diseases later on in life.
