Metabolism: Increase Energy Lose Weight
The process which our bodies convert food and nutrient into energy is called metabolism. This process is very complex because it involves many different chemical reactions to produce energy. Our bodies can have thousands of metabolic reactions happening at the same time. Without metabolism, our bodies cannot do work, grow or survive. There are two types of metabolism, anabolism and catabolism.
- Anabolism: The constructive side of metabolism. It helps store energy energy and build body tissues.
- Catabolism: The destructive side of metabolism, it produces the energy required for the body to do work. This process is done in the mitochondria, the part of the cell that breaks down carbohydrates and fats into energy.
To understand how metabolism works and how it can increase your energy, you need to understand the energy process of life. One of the major things that makes life possible on Earth is the sun. It is the main source of energy for all species at the physical level. The human body cannot harness the sun’s incredible energy. It must rely heavily on plant to obtain this energy. Plants and certain bacterias are the only species that can convert sunlight into energy. The process which plant convert sunlight to sugar (energy) is called photosynthesis. This sugar, when consumed by animal or human, is converted into energy through the metabolism process.
Many people think that when they eat animal meat, they are getting energy from the meat itself. The truth is, they are actually getting the left over energy from plants which got it from the sun. The energy we get from eating animal is not as pure as the energy we get from eating plants. For example: a piece of grass gets eaten by a grasshopper, the grasshopper gets eaten by a frog, the frog gets eaten by a snake, the snake gets eaten by a hawk, the hawk gets eaten by a human. During each transformation stage, energy is lost because it is changed from one form to another. Meat is actually not that good for the body because it contains bad cholesterol and little nutrients.
How many calories your body can burn depends on your basal metabolic rate (BMR), insulin and enzyme levels, muscle mass and how much you exercise. BMR is a measurement of how fast your body can burn calories. Your muscle also plays an important role for helping you lose weight. If you want to burn more calories, increase your muscle mass because it takes more energy to move bigger muscle. Another great way to increase your BMR is through exercise. Exercising makes your body work harder, this burns more calories and prevents atrophy. Enzymes also play important roles for increasing your metabolism. If your cells lack enzymes, they will convert glucose (blood sugar) into energy slower.
Many people believed that starving themselves and exercising intensively are the best ways to lose weight. This is actually one of the worst ways to lose weight. When people starved themselves, they decreased their BMR because their bodies had to adjust to the lack of food. This is not good for preventing weight gain because once they start eating again, their low BMR will cause their bodies to store more energy as fat. By not eating healthy, they also deplete essential nutrients that are required for metabolism.
