Amalgam Fillings: Mercury Hazards

The next time you go to the dentist to get your teeth fill with fillings, you may want to think twice about going the cheaper route. There are a few dental fillings available, the cheaper one is amalgam fillings, also known as silver fillings. Amalgam fillings are a major concern for many doctors and health experts because they contain mercury, one of the deadliest elements found on Earth. Below is a quote from a well respected doctor, Robert Gammel.

The metallic silvery black fillings in your mouth are often called Silver Amalgam fillings! They are in fact Mercury Amalgams Fillings. They are made from an alloy of; Silver, Tin, Zinc, Copper which is mixed with 50% MERCURY. It is estimated that the average Amalgam Filling will release up to half of its Mercury content over a ten year period ( 50% Corrosion Rate). It will therefore release between 68 and 130 Micrograms per Day per Filling.

Mercury is a naturally occurring element, it is use in batteries, thermometers, fluorescent light bulb, certain skin creams and dental fillings. Another form of mercury is methylmercury which is produced mainly by microorganisms. This type of mercury is mostly found in fish. Mercury is very toxic to the body, it has been linked to Alzheimer’s disease, depression, anxiety, birth defects, organ and brain damage, and immune deficiency. Once in the body, mercury attaches itself to proteins and selenium, a trace element which is important for cellular health. This prevents the body to heal itself. The brain is one of the organs that is most affected by mercury. Mercury is one of the few substances that can pass through the blood-brain barrier. It can stay in the brain for up to 10 years or longer and cause brain damage.

Mercury health hazards:

  • Known to be more toxic than lead or arsenic
  • Most of the mercury in amalgam is released as vapor, affecting the lung
  • Mercury vapor can be absorbed directly into the brain
  • Toxic to cells, even at small levels
  • Can cross the blood-brain barrier and also the placenta
  • Can interfere with the development of the fetus
  • Linked to immune deficiency and DNA damage
  • Linked to organ damage, especially the brain and kidney

  1. Those reading this article might be interested in hearing more on this subject this Friday, May 15 at 11 am ET on my blogtalk show: http://www.blogtalkradio.com/innovativemediapr. My guest will be Charles G. Brown, Counsel for Consumers for Dental Choice.

Consumers for Dental Choice has been actively leading the fight to eradicate the use of mercury amalgam in dental fillings. The FDA will issue a classification ruling on mercury in late July. We’ll talk with Brown about how his organization, since 1996, has championed this fight to eliminate this toxin from being used in dental care.
