Headache Relief: Natural Remedies
Headache is such a common thing in the United States that more than half of Americans suffer from some sort of headache. According to WebMD, about 45 million Americans suffer from chronic headaches. Headache has so many causes that it would take a dozen pages to list them all. Some common causes of headaches are: stress, lack of sleep, eyestrain, head injury, viral infection, unhealthy diets, smoking and drinking. There are many headache relief remedies available on the market, below are some great examples.
Headache relief remedies:
- Peppermint extract or oil: Studies have shown that peppermint can temporary relieve headaches because of its soothing properties. Peppermint is known for relaxing muscles and relieving respiratory discomfort. These are some of the reasons why it is popular for relieving headache. How to use peppermint: Add 5 to 10 drops of peppermint oil into a small bowl of warm or cold water. Dip a washcloth into the bowl, then squeeze the washcloth until it is semi-dry. Apply the washcloth onto your forehead for about 10 minutes, repeat if necessary.
- Feverfew: Studies have shown that feverfew has the ability to prevent blood vessel in the brain from dilating. This may help relieve headache and migraine. Feverfew is available in leaf form, tablets, capsules and liquid extracts.
- Rosemary or Mint Tea: Rosemary and mint have been used as headache relief remedies for centuries. Steep two teaspoons of fresh leaves or one tea packet in a cup of boiled or hot water for about 10 minutes. Strain and drink the tea, or apply as a compress to the forehead. Combining these two methods will help relieve the headache even better.
Other ways to relieve headache:
- Acupuncture: This energy technique is used for stimulating acupressure points (energy centers) on the body and unblocking meridians (energy pathways). People who had tried acupuncture said that it works and the results are almost instantly.
- Meditation: Studies have shown that meditation may increase blood flow and reduce stress which is beneficial for relieving headache.
- Sugar Free Drinks: Most of them contain artificial sweetener which has been known to cause headaches. Avoid them as much as possible.
- Artificial Sweetener: Artificial sweetener such as Equal is classified as a neurotoxin by many researchers. Avoid using it to sweeten your coffee or drinks.
