Acupuncture: Alternative Medicine for Balancing Your Energy

Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese medicine technique that uses needles to stimulate acupuncture points (acupoints). Acupuncture points are condensed tiny centers of electromagnetic energy that are arranged along the fourteen meridians. Acupuncture points are not limited to the fourteen meridians. They are found all over the surface of the skin. These energy points are where acupuncture needles or acupressure are applied to control pain, treat illnesses, and increase health and energy.

Acupuncture practitioners believe there are meridians (energy channels) that run in certain patterns within the body and on its surface. They work similar to how blood flows through the veins and capillaries of the body. Acupuncturists believe that when our meridians get clogged or don’t flow properly, sickness and disease can manifest soon after. One of the reasons why acupuncturists believe acupuncture can heal the body is because it tackles health problems at a deeper level. In this case it is the energetic level. If you have decent knowledge about quantum physics, you may notice that matter is nothing more than energy manifested into physical form. Depending which side of the energy’s polarity, the manifested matter can be positive or negative. If we incorporated this idea to our health, the essence of disease is nothing more than manifestation of negative energy. By treating the problem at the energetic level, acupuncturists can help stop diseases before they manifest into physical forms.

When you first go see a professional acupuncturist, s/he will usually check your energy. Licensed acupuncturists are trained for many years and are very sensitive to energy. Because of their talent, they can usually read your energy accurately and pinpoint the meridians that are not flowing properly. Once they figure out the source of your energetic problem, they will poke your acupuncture points with very thin needles. This procedure is not as painful as it looks. It is more relaxing than painful. It is not common for people to fall asleep during this procedure. The needles are designed to stimulate the energy flow in your meridians so it is working properly again. Once the session is over, your acupuncturist may give you herbs to help cleanse your body of toxins. Compared to surgery, acupuncture is very cheap and usually cost less than $100 per session.

I have not try acupuncture but I do know people who had tried it. People who had tried acupuncture said that it was very relaxing and usually lasted no longer than an hour. My mom had also tried acupuncture and got very good results from it. She has high blood pressure and relies heavily on pharmaceutical drugs. The drugs do help but also gave her major side effects. After being on the drugs for about 6 months, I told her to go visit an acupuncturist. She was skeptical at first but finally gave in and called for a session. Her visit consists of 3 session, $30 per session which was very cheap. After the first session her blood pressure dropped about 50 points. At the end of her third session, her blood pressure was back to normal again. Unfortunately, she did not follow her acupuncturist’s advise and went back to her deep-fried, junk food diet. A few weeks later, her blood pressure went back up again.

Acupuncture is something that I would like to try someday. I do not have any health problems that I know of so I’m not in a hurry to try it. If you are a person who has high blood pressure or any other chronic disease, and wants to get off medication, acupuncture may be one of the solutions for you. Below is an excellent video clip that goes in depth about acupuncture and what you should expect when going in for a session.

  1. Thanks for the introduction about acupuncture, Chang. A licensed acupuncturist is usually also a trained Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) physician, so he or she will usually feel your pulse at your wrist first. This is similar to what Western doctor would do by listening to your heart or lungs with a stethoscope. Is the feeling of pulse what you meant by checking your energy?

For your Mum’s high blood pressure, in additional to acupuncture, I suggest she takes up some light exercises everyday. It doesn’t need to be strenuous and shouldn’t be, especially if she’s been inactive for many years. A brisk walk at the nearby park at a pace that makes her breathing heavier than normal is a good start. By persisting in daily exercise, it’s possible to bring blood pressure down and even ward off the need for long-term medications.

    Good luck.

    Cheers,

Yes, acupuncturists usually check their patients’ energy by sensing their pulses on their wrist. Although, they are not limited to just the wrist.

I agree with you about the light exercise. If my mom change her diet and exercise regularly, she wouldn’t have high blood pressure.
