  • 2 red apples quartered and cored (organic preferred)
  • 4 slices whole wheat bread
  • 5 – 10 ounces cheese of your choice (soy or nut-based cheese preferred, healthier)
  • Butter or olive oil (optional)
  • 4 – 6  fresh garlic heads (optional)
  • Black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon of sage spice or 6 sage leaves (chopped)

Directions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F using the broiler option.
  2. Slice the apple into thin slices and grate the cheese.
  3. Toast one side of the breads until they are slightly brown. Note: If using garlic, bake the garlic first. Go to step 5 for further instruction.
  4. Turn the breads over and spread butter or olive oil on top of the non-toasted sides. You can also use garlic juice as an alternative.
  5. To use the garlic, place 4 – 6 peeled garlic heads on a cooking pan and sprinkle a little bit of olive oil on top of them. Cover the garlics with aluminum foil and bake for about 30 minutes at 400°F. If the garlics are soft, it is ready. If not, bake them for another 5 minute or so. Let the garlics cool, then cut the top section of them and squeeze the roasted garlic on the non-toasted side of the breads. For picture and more detail instruction visit this page. Don’t forget to turn down the oven to 350°F when you are done with the garlics.
  6. Put the apple slices on top of each bread and cover them with cheese.
  7. Broil the apple toasts for about 5 minutes or until their cheese melt. Don’t cook them for too long because it will destroy many of the apple’s nutrients.
  8. When ready, take the apple toasts out and sprinkle them with sage and black pepper. Serve immediately for best taste!

  1. Wow, refreshing revamp, Chang! I like it because it’s less cluttered now. Great work!

About apples, despite their goodness, they are also one of the fruits that have been sprayed with the most insecticides. So buying organic apples isn’t so much an option, but a must I’m afraid.
