Stevia: Natural Sweetener

Stevia HerbStevia (stevia rebaudiana) is a herb that has a sweetness similar to sugar. In its natural state, stevia is about 15 times sweeter than table sugar. Unlike artificial sweetener such as aspartame, natural stevia (organic) has no known side effects. Aspartame is classified as a neurotoxin by many health experts. Stevia is very popular as a herbal tea for diabetics in Asian countries. According to a research done by the University of Sao Paolo, volunteers who took stevia extract had significant lower blood sugar levels than volunteers who did not. Other similar studies came up with the same conclusion but found out that it may also help treat heartburn, high blood pressure, colds and flu.

The natural version of stevia has many health benefits but the processed version lacks many of the benefits, and may even have negative side effects. When buying stevia extracts, make sure you read the supplement facts before purchasing them. Some stevia is processed and may contain certain chemicals that are harmful to the body. Stevia that is processed doesn’t contain the same nutrients and is very concentrated. Because it is refined, it is a lot sweeter than natural stevia and is not as healthy. Natural stevia is similar to natural sugar from fruits and processed stevia is similar to refined sugar from candy. The difference in health benefits are like night and day. Manufacturers of refined stevia claimed that it is 300 times sweeter than table sugar, has no calories and no carbohydrates.

The secret of this natural sweetener comes from its complex molecule called stevioside. Stevioside is made of sophorose, glucose and steviol. These three molecules combined with other complex molecules, are the reasons why stevia is one of nature’s best sugar substitutes. Because stevia is known to improve blood sugar levels, it is becoming very popular as a natural sugar substitutes for diabetics. Before stevia became popular, it was really hard to find it. Now days, stevia is available at many health food stores nationwide.

I was only know about honey which is sweet after sugar. It is really new for me to know about the stevia. Is stevia is also available in market or any online shop where we can purchase it?

Stevia should be available at Whole Foods or Wild Oats store nationwide (US). Visit this page for more information on other locations.

Many stevia products sold in stores are usually refined. The ones that are not refined should not be as sweet as the refined ones. I suggest sticking with honey if you can’t find unrefined stevia.
