Herb Types and Uses – Part One

There are hundreds, maybe even thousands of herbs that are still being use today to treat diseases. Herbalists who have been in the herb industry for years are very familiar with the different types of herbs and their uses. If you are new to the herbal community, you may want to learn certain terms to help you communicate with other herbalists. Below is a list of some of the common terms that are use in the herbal community. The list also includes herbs that fit in each term/category.
- Alteratives: Herbs in this category are blood cleansers. They help the body eliminate toxins and metabolic waste products. Alfalfa, dandelion and echinacea are examples of alteratives.
- Analgesics: These types of herb are use for relieving pain. Examples of analgesics are fennel and kelp.
- Antiabortives: These herbs are popular for preventing miscarriage. They are usually taken in small dosages during the early stages of pregnancy. Examples of antiabortives are skullcap and red raspberry.
- Antibiotics: Herbs in this category have strong antibacterial and antiviral properties. They are popular for assisting the body to fight bacteria, viruses and other microorganisms. Examples of these herbs are goldenseal, echinacea and thyme.
- Antipyretics: Are herbs use for neutralizing acidic blood. These herbs are popular for fever because they help cool the body. Peppermint, skullcap and basil are good examples of antipyretics.
- Antiseptics: Herbs in this category are known for inhibiting internal and external bacteria growth. Examples of antiseptics are sage and thyme.
- Antispasmodics: These herbs are popular for cramps and muscle spasms because they help relax muscle. Skullcap and valerian are examples of antispasmodics.
- Aphrodisiacs: Are herbs that increase sexual desire and rejuvenate sexual organs. Ginseng, garlic and angelica are great examples of aphrodisiacs.
- Astringents: These herbs are use to help shrink or constrict body tissues, which is why they are popular for treating swollen tonsils and hemorrhoids. Aloe juice, white oak bark, turmeric and witch hazel are examples of astringents.
- Carminatives: Are popular for treating digestive problems, such as gas and intestinal problem. Basil, ginger, cinnamon, mints, fennel and dill are considered carminatives.
- Demulcents: These herbs are use for soothing inflamed tissue. Fenugreek, comfrey leaves and root are examples of these types of herb.
- Diaphoretics: Herbs in this category are well known for promoting respiratory health. Drinking warm tea made from diaphoretics promotes sweating. On the other hand, the cold tea act as diuretics. Examples of diaphoretics are basil, bayberry, cloves, ephedra, ginger, peppermint, sage and chamomile.
