NK Cells: Cancer Fighting Cells

CellCells are the body’s best friends but can also become the body’s worst enemies. Most people don’t have symptoms of cancer during their younger years but that could change as they get older. Many people don’t realize that cancer is actually a normal process in their body. There isn’t much people can do to prevent their cells from becoming cancerous. In fact, the average adults produce a few cancer cells in their bodies every week. The main reason why young people don’t die from cancer is because they still have a strong immune system. The immune system is one of nature’s greatest achievements. It is designed to destroy all invaders, even cancer cells. The part of the immune system that search and destroy cancer cell are called natural killer cells (NK cells).

The main job of NK cells is to search and destroy cancer cells. They destroy cancer cells by penetrating their surface and releasing a dose of toxic enzymes into them. NK cells operate under their own command, they don’t need to be told to kill cancer cells. This make them very effective because they can kill cancer cells quickly. The bad thing about NK cells is that they don’t have memory. NK cells also kill viruses, bacteria, parasites, fungi, and cells that are infected by these microorganisms. NK cells have the ability to release a chemical called interferons, which prevent microorganisms from multiplying. This makes them really effective at killing microorganisms. Because NK cells are essential for fighting cancer, low numbers of NK cells will increase your chance of getting cancer. To increase your NK cell levels, you should exercise more and eat food loaded with nutrients.
