Food nutrition should be a top subject in school because it can save many lives and reduce our health care cost. Many health experts suggested that we should follow the recommended daily intake (RDI) of nutrient. This recommendation is not very accurate because it only recommends the minimal requirement of nutrient. In order for us to live healthy lives with little diseases, we need to consume more nutrients than what is required by our government and the food industry. Our body relies heavily on nutrients to help rebuild itself, fight diseases and utilize energy. With the right daily intake of nutrients: cancer, diabetes, heart disease, birth defects, Alzheimer and obesity would not be problems in countries that currently have these health pandemics.
10 food nutrition tips
- Eat organic food instead of conventional food. Many conventional food is processed and contains synthetic chemicals that are harmful to the body.
- When eating fruits and vegetables, if necessary, don’t cook them because it will destroy a good portion of their nutrients. If you need to cook them, use a pressure cooker or cover the pan with a lid to help preserve the nutrients.
- Don’t skip breakfast and avoid high-sugar food in the morning. Instead, eat food loaded with complex carbohydrates such as whole grain cereal.
- Avoid cooking oil as much as possible, especially hydrogenated oil. Consuming any types of oil can stimulate the liver to produce more cholesterol than the body needs. Most, if not all, cooking oil is processed and doesn’t contain plant sterols, sterolins and other essential nutrients.
- If you are on birth control pills, you may want to watch your vitamin C, B6 and B9 levels. Birth control pills can prevent the body from assimilating vitamin C, B6 and B9 properly. Fruits and vegetables usually contain good levels of these vitamins.
- Avoid caffeinated beverages as much as possible, instead drink organic juice or filtered water. Caffeine promotes fluid lost because it is a mild diuretic. It also increases magnesium depletion. Magnesium is important for bone and heart health and energy.
- Cut back on junk food. Junk food usually contains high levels of refined sugar. Refined sugar is a carcinogen that weakens the immune system.
- Avoid genetically modified foods. Scientists have not done enough tests to ensure the safety of these foods. Therefore, new allergies and diseases may be the result of consuming these foods. The PLU code for foods that are genetically engineered consist of 5 numbers and begins with 8 (e.g. 84012).
- Avoid eating too much meat-based foods. Meat contains little nutrients and are full of cholesterol. It has been known to lower immunity and increase the risk of heart disease.
- Avoid artificial sweetener as much as possible. Independent researchers suggested that these sugar substitutes can stimulate brain cells to death. This is why they classified them as neurotoxins.
