Thymus Gland: Why it is Important for Immunity
The thymus gland is a flat, pinkish-grey organ that sits behind the breast bone, right beneath the collar bone. The thymus gland is important for immunity because it produces T-cells. These T-cells aid the immune system by helping cells destroy virus, bacteria, and abnormal cells such as cancer. Studies have shown that people with weak thymus glands have a higher chance of getting infection and cancer.
There are many things that can reduce the function of the thymus gland. Some of them are toxins, unhealthy food and aging. Researchers found out that after puberty, the thymus gland gradually shrinks. Once it shrinks enough, people’s immunity starts to decline. The reason why the thymus gland shrinks is because as people age, less of the hormone thymulin is produce. This hormone is needed to stimulate the production of T-cells. Eating junk food is bad for the thymus gland because junk food contains little nutrient. Junk food also contains synthetic chemicals which can harm the thymus gland.
Ways to stimulate the thymus gland:
- Studies have shown that vitamin A, C and E can improve the activity level of the thymus gland. They also found out that the mineral selenium and zinc can enlarge it, therefore can increase its ability to produce more T-cells. To increase your intake of these vitamins and minerals, concentrate on fruits and vegetables (organic) that are high in them. You can also take dietary supplements, but be careful because not all supplements contain high quality vitamins and minerals.
- Find the section at the middle of your chest where your two collarbone join together. Move straight down about 2 inches and tap this area a dozen time with your fingers. Tapping this area will stimulate the energy surrounding the thymus gland which may improve thymus functions.
