Gallstones Treatment and Prevention

Gallstones usually occur when there is too much cholesterol or bilirubin in the bile. The bile is a fluid made by the liver for digesting fat. It is stored in the gallbladder and is released into the small intestine when needed. Excessive cholesterol or bilirubin in the gallbladder can crystallize and form stones. Most gallstones that are formed in the gallbladder usually don’t cause major problems. Health problems usually occur when gallstones move out of the gallbladder and end up blocking ducts of the gallbladder, liver, or pancreas. These blockages can cause inflammation, severe pain, infection and even organ failure.

Natural gallstones treatment:

  • Lecithin: Helps decrease cholesterol levels in the bile and dissolve small cholesterol stones.
  • Peppermint oil: Studies have shown that peppermint oil may help the body dissolve gallstones because it increase bile production.
  • Turmeric: This herb is known to stimulate gallbladder contractions and bile flow. It is not recommended for use in cases with painful gallstones.
  • Milk thistle: Helps prevent gallstone formation by keeping the bile more liquid.
  • Artichoke: The leaves of artichoke contain caffeoylquinic acid which can increase bile production. This can help dissolve the fat and cholesterol deposits in the gallbladder.

Gallstones prevention tips:

  • Avoid eating diet high in fat, low in fiber and simple carbohydrates (e.g. junk food and fast food).
  • Drink about 6 to 8 glass of water per day.
  • Avoid drinking coffee and energy drink because they contained caffeine. Caffeine can promote fluid lost because it is a mild diuretic.
  • Eat plenty of fresh organic fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables contain high levels of nutrients and enzymes. Enzymes assist the stomach to digest food which may decrease the risk of gallstones.
  • Studies shown that people who are overweight have a higher chance of getting gallstones. If you are overweight, you may want to go on a healthy weight loss program.
