Propyl alcohol, also known as isopropyl and rubbing alcohol, is an antiseptic that is widely used to kill harmful microorganisms. Propyl alcohol is found in dozens of products, such as: rubbing alcohol, shampoo, hair spray, body lotion, deodorant, toothpaste, mouthwash, nail polish, shaving cream and bottled water. Propyl alcohol is easily absorbed through the skin. It is twice as toxic as ethanol and can cause death if ingested. The vapor from propyl alcohol is also toxic and can cause harmful side effects, such as headache, nausea and narcosis. One of the greatest dangers of propyl alcohol is its carcinogenic properties. Studies have shown that people who used propyl alcohol on a regular basis have significantly higher risk of cancer. Because propyl alcohol is very toxic, you may want to use other alternatives to kill harmful microorganisms. Below is a list of safer alternatives to proply alcohol.
