Stomach Ulcers: Causes and Treatments
Image provided by Marcin Chady
The stomach has a protective lining that keeps bacteria and stomach acid from damaging it. When its lining gets damaged, ulceration can develop. Stomach ulcers that are not treated in a timely manner can erode the stomach wall and cause it to bleed. Stomach ulcers are caused by many things but one of the causes that has strong support from researchers is bacterial infection. Researchers have found a strong link between the bacteria Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) and stomach ulcers. Bacterial infection in the stomach is more common when the body lacks vitamin C or the stomach contains low levels of hydrochloric acid. Other causes of stomach ulcers are: stress, high fat and low fiber diet, junk food, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and high dosage of aspirin (over 75 mg per day). Taking aspirin in high amounts has been linked to an increase in gastrointestinal bleeding.
The treatments and prevention tips below are recommended in addition to your physician’s advice.

- L-glutamine: Studies have shown that L-glutamine may help heal mucous lining of the intestinal tract. Nutritionist recommends taking 1000 mg twice daily.
- Oregano oil: The oil from oregano is lethal to many fungus, bacteria and virus. Nutritionist recommends adding 3 drops of oregano oil in a cup of water and drinking it twice daily for 3-5 days.
- Fruit Juice: Aloe vera and cranberry juice are great for inhibiting bacterial growth. For best result drink the organic ones or even better make your own juice.
- Avoid smoking: According to researchers, people who smoke are twice as likely to have ulcers. One of the reasons is because smoking may increase the production of hydrochloric acid.
- Organic plant-based food: Organic fruits and vegetables are full of essential nutrients and fiber which are important for gastrointestinal health. For best results, eat organic fruits and vegetables that are grown on soil laced with rock dust.
- Refined sugar: Reduce your intake of refined sugar as much as possible because it reduces immune function. A weak immune system increases the risk of bacterial infection.
