Ten Reasons Why You Should Reduce Alcohol Consumption


Imagine one day waking up and finding out that alcohol beverage has been banned. How would this change your life? If you experience strong negative emotions while answering this question, you may want take a few deep breaths and ask yourself why alcohol has become a controlling factor for your life.

Like most things that you consume, alcohol beverage is safe enough to drink because it isn’t lethal in normal levels. Although, drinking alcohol regularly can destroy your health. When it comes to drinking alcohol, a lot of people tend to consume more than they should. This can lead to chronic health problems later on in life. Below is a list of ten reasons why you should reduce alcohol consumption.

  1. Alcohol kills brain cells which is why you experience headaches after a night of heavy drinking.
  2. Alcohol decreases blood pH level which leads to acidic blood. When your blood is acidic, it decreases cell function and creates an environment for harmful microorganisms to flourish.
  3. Alcohol contains toxins that are harmful to stomach linings. If your stomach linings are damaged, they can’t secrete digestive enzymes to digest food. Food that isn’t digested properly is hard to absorb which can lead to malnutrition. The lack of nutrient will decrease your energy and health.
  4. Alcohol is bad for the liver because the toxins in alcohol can erode liver cells. The liver has many functions, some of them are: filtering harmful substances, breaking down fat and producing cholesterol. If your liver isn’t working properly, your body will have a hard time cleansing itself.
  5. The toxins found in alcohol can cause birth defects. If you are pregnant, you should avoid drinking alcohol beverages.
  6. Studies have shown that alcohol beverages can increase the risk of cancer because they increase free radical activity in the body. Free radicals are basically atoms or molecules that had loss an electron; therefore, they are very reactive. Free radicals are harmful to cells and DNA because they can disrupt their normal functions and cause mutations.
  7. Alcohol weakens the immune system because it disrupts cell activities by making the blood more acidic.
  8. Alcohol robs the body of essential nutrients. The toxic chemicals in alcohol disrupt the chemical balance in your body. One of the ways your body brings its chemical back into balance is by using nutrients.
  9. Alcohol raises blood sugar levels because it contain simple carbohydrates. Simple carbohydrates are great for causing spikes in blood sugar levels because they are easy to break down into glucose.
  10. Alcohol increases the risk of obesity. Most alcohol beverages are high in calories and simple carbohydrates. Simple carbohydrates are quickly broken down and absorbed by your body. This causes spikes in your blood sugar level. To bring your blood sugar level back into balance your body will end up storing the excessive blood sugar as fat.
