Going Natural to Cure an Enlarged Prostate

This is a guest post written by Ernesto Martinez.

The older a man gets, the greater the chance of him encountering prostate problems. The prostate is a walnut sized gland that sits below the bladder and is an important part of a man’s reproductive system. By the time most men reach the age of 60, 80% will have some urinary problems due to an enlarged prostate gland. There are medications that doctors can prescribe to relieve an enlarged prostate, but some of these medications do have adverse side effects. So instead of dealing with harsh medications, why not consider natural cures? Let’s take a look at some of them.

Saw Palmetto

Saw Palmetto is probably the best natural cure for an enlarged prostate available today. It actually works like the prescribed drug Proscar, but without the nasty side effects. Saw Palmetto has a reputation of greatly reducing the size of an enlarged prostate as well as inhibiting the hormones that help cause the enlargement in the first place.

Saw Palmetto is a plant that grows in Florida and Georgia. The plant is harvested, standardized, and is usually taken orally in capsule form. At the recommended dose, there are no known side effects. Not having any side effects is the main difference between Saw Palmetto and Proscar. Proscar can cause loss in libido, impotence, abnormal ejaculation and even breast enlargement. Saw Palmetto is truly a wonderful natural alternative.

Zinc

Another natural way to help an enlarged prostate is with zinc. There are several studies that show that zinc deficiency can cause an enlarged prostate. Stress and infection can lower zinc levels in the body. Supplementing with zinc can reduce prostate inflammation and relieve the symptoms associated with prostate enlargement.

When supplementing with zinc to cure an enlarged prostate, men should take 50 to 100 milligrams to be effective. For those who decide to try this, don’t be tempted to take any more than the 50-100 milligrams. That dosage should be more than enough to see results.

Pygeum Africanum

Another way to attack an enlarged prostate naturally is with Pygeum africanum. This is an herb that comes from Africa and has been shown to help reduce inflammation. Though not as popular as Saw Palmetto, Pygeum africanum can be quite effective and is sometimes used in conjunction with other natural methods to help heal the prostate.

By using these natural methods you can prevent and cure prostate enlargement without the harsh side effects of prescription medication. You can combine natural methods together to get a synergistic effect. This basically means that these natural methods attack the problem through different mechanisms and enhance the effect each other. Even when natural cures are combined in this manner they still do not produce any adverse side effect for the user. Natural cures are quite effective and should not be overlooked. As always, men over 40 – 50 years of age should get their prostate checked annually.
