Sunburn TanningSummer is almost here and that means there are going to be a lot of hot sunny days. As a result, the risk of sunburn will increase. When you get a sunburn, it is your body’s way of responding to its skin being damaged by ultraviolet (UV) radiation which is one of the spectra of sunlight.

Sunlight is very beneficial for your body because it rejuvenates your body by giving your skin the necessary ingredients to produce vitamin D. This vitamin is very important for immune health. Even though sunlight is beneficial for your health, exposing yourself to high levels of sunlight for long periods of time can cause sunburn.

Below are two natural remedies that can help ease the pain of sunburn. If the sunburn is very severe, you may want to consult with a doctor before using the remedies below.

Aloe vera

Aloe vera is commonly used as a topical relief and healing agent for burns because of its soothing and anti-inflammatory effects. The most convenient way to get aloe vera is to purchase the gel version at your local health store. I recommend purchasing the pure version that is free of harmful synthetic chemicals. Whenever you get a sunburn, apply the aloe vera gel onto the affected area. The healing effects of aloe vera should help reduce the redness and itchiness associated with sunburned skin.

Raw potatoes

Potatoes may not look like they have healing properties but these little vegetables have been used for a wide variety of skin conditions for millennia. Potatoes are popular for treating skin irritations, burns, rashes and dry skin. To use a potato for relieving sunburn, cut a raw potato in slices and apply the inner sections onto the sunburned skin. Organic potatoes are preferred.

You can also cut a raw potato into chunks and throw them into a blender with a little bit of water and blend them until they become a liquid form. Apply the liquid onto the sunburned skin and then take a cold shower after the liquid is dried.

Recommended sunscreen

I only recommend using sunscreen when you are planning to stay out in the sun for more than 30 minutes to an hour because sunscreen can reduce vitamin D production by 97 percent or more. If a sunscreen contains dioxybenzone or oxybenzone, you should avoid purchasing or using it. Dioxybenzone and oxybenzone have very toxic properties and are some of the most powerful free radical generators. Other toxic ingredients found in sunscreen are para amino benzoic acid, sulisobenzone, octyl salicyclate, avobenzone, menthyl anthranilate, cinoxate, phenylbenzimidazole, homosalat, trolamine salicyclate and octocrylene.

A sunscreen worth checking out is Dr. Mercola Natural Sunscreen Lotion (SPF 30). This sunscreen is water resistant, hypoallergenic, and free of chemical fragrances, parabens and nanoparticles. It contains no oxybenzone and dioxybenzone.
