During the past few years, 3D printing technology has evolved so fast that it can now be used to print almost anything. Today, some researchers are even using it to print human organs. That is right! For visual evidence, check out the short video below.

Another interesting thing that 3D printing technology is being used for is to print solar cells. In fact, researchers at the VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland have developed some very interesting 3D printed solar cells called “energy harvesting trees”. The tiny “trees” generate and store solar energy that can be used to power small appliances and mobile devices. In the near future, 3D printed solar cells can provide inexpensive energy to millions of people.

What is a 3D printer?

A 3D printer works similar to a traditional printer except that it uses 3D modeling technology to build a three dimensional object using specialized 3D printing (additive manufacturing) materials. 3D printers are computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) devices that harness a technology called additive manufacturing. This technology builds physical three dimensional objects from scratch using a layer by layer method which produces less waste. This feature is one of the reasons that additive manufacturing is more popular than subtractive manufacturing in 3D printing applications.

Types of 3D Printing Materials

The most common types of additive manufacturing materials are plastic and polymer. However, metal (e.g., steel, aluminum and titanium) is gaining popularity as a 3D printing material for certain additive manufacturing applications. The automotive and aerospace industry will benefit a lot from using metal as a 3D printing material for their computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) devices. Besides traditional metals, gold, silver and ceramic are also being used for 3D printing applications. Gold and silver are popular for creating 3D printed jewelry.

How Much Does a 3D Printer Cost?

A 3D printer can cost anywhere from a few hundred dollars to over $10,000. Makerbot is one of the popular 3D printing companies that sells affordable 3D printers for businesses and homes. Their 3D printers can cost anywhere from $900 to over $6,000. The good news is that the price of 3D printers is decreasing. You can now find 3D printers on Amazon for as low as $200 or less.

Here is a list of some of the popular 3D printers:

  • Makerbot: Great for business applications
  • Printrbot: Popular for art applications
  • XYZ Printing: Great for people on a tight budget
