Equal is a popular artificial sweetener used for sweetening drinks and certain foods. It is one of the most widely used artificial sweeteners due to its zero calories and “weight loss” claims. As of June 2014, there are four brands of Equal available on the market, which are Equal Original, Equal Sucralose, Equal Saccharin, and Equal Next. All the four brands of Equal contain harmful synthetic ingredients that will affect your energy in negative ways. Since they have very little or no calories, they do a poor job of boosting your energy.

The main ingredients in Equal Original are dextrose with maltodextrin, aspartame, and acesulfame potassium. In the United States alone, these ingredients can be found in more than 6,000 food products nationwide. Aspartame and acesulfame potassium are the two ingredients you need to pay attention to, because they can produce toxic side effects when ingested. Some popular food products that have aspartame as an ingredient are soft drink, candy, cereal, chewing gum, ice cream, energy drink, jello, cookies, and certain baby food.

Equal side effects

According to Equal.com, when aspartame is ingested, it “breaks down into the amino acids aspartic acid and phenylalanine, as well as a small amount of methanol–components found naturally in foods like meats, milk, fruits, and vegetables.” What Equal.com doesn’t tell you is that methanol by itself is very toxic to the body and can cause blindness or even death. It is true that many fruits contain small levels of methanol. However, they also have ethanol, the antidote for methanol. Without ethanol to keep methanol in check, methanol becomes very toxic to the body.

When your body breaks down aspartame, one of the substances that is released is a byproduct called aspartate, which is an excitatory amino acid. In normal levels and condition, aspartate isn’t harmful, but in high levels and without the aid of certain amino acids, it becomes a neurotoxin that can destroy nerve cells and brain cells. This is why some researchers believe that aspartame can cause neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s. Aspartame has been linked to fatigue, headaches, migraines, seizures, nausea, muscle spasms, weight gain, depression, irritability, insomnia, vision problems, hearing loss, anxiety attacks, breathing problems, memory loss, and joint pain.

The aspartame in Equal is very different from natural unprocessed sugar. Sugar in fruits has many amino acids and other synergistic components that are needed to prevent the sugar from breaking down into toxic chemicals. Unlike natural sugar, aspartame doesn’t have these synergistic components and therefore when you ingest aspartame, it breaks down into toxic chemicals. Refined sugar also doesn’t have these synergistic components, which is why refined sugar is a toxin and has been linked to cancer and autoimmune disorders.

How Equal affects your energy

The ingredients in Equal are very harmful to your cells and organs. The more you consume Equal, the more your body will slowly deteriorate. As the health condition of your body and cells deteriorates, your energy also decreases, leading to chronic fatigue. When it comes to health and energy, aspartame is the ingredient in Equal that you should pay attention to the most. One of the toxic substances that is released when aspartame is metabolized by the body is methanol. The danger about methanol is that it can be broken down further into formaldehyde, a neurotoxin that is great at interfering with cell performance, which can lead to metabolism issues and less energy.

To prevent artificial sweeteners from destroying your energy, avoid ingesting drink and food products that have these synthetic sweeteners. Instead of using Equal to sweeten your tea, coffee, or beverage, use healthy sugar substitutes like organic stevia powder.
