Thymus Gland: Why it is Important for Immunity

The thymus gland is a flat, pinkish-grey organ that sits behind the breast bone, right beneath the collar bone. The thymus gland is important for immunity because it produces T-cells. These T-cells aid the immune system by helping cells destroy virus, bacteria, and abnormal cells such as cancer. Studies have shown that people with weak thymus glands have a higher chance of getting infection and cancer.

There are many things that can reduce the function of the thymus gland. Some of them are toxins, unhealthy food and aging. Researchers found out that after puberty, the thymus gland gradually shrinks. Once it shrinks enough, people’s immunity starts to decline. The reason why the thymus gland shrinks is because as people age, less of the hormone thymulin is produce. This hormone is needed to stimulate the production of T-cells. Eating junk food is bad for the thymus gland because junk food contains little nutrient. Junk food also contains synthetic chemicals which can harm the thymus gland.

Ways to stimulate the thymus gland:

  • Studies have shown that vitamin A, C and E can improve the activity level of the thymus gland. They also found out that the mineral selenium and zinc can enlarge it, therefore can increase its ability to produce more T-cells. To increase your intake of these vitamins and minerals, concentrate on fruits and vegetables (organic) that are high in them. You can also take dietary supplements, but be careful because not all supplements contain high quality vitamins and minerals.
  • Find the section at the middle of your chest where your two collarbone join together. Move straight down about 2 inches and tap this area a dozen time with your fingers. Tapping this area will stimulate the energy surrounding the thymus gland which may improve thymus functions.

Glycemic Index Pros and Cons

The glycemic index (GI) is a nutrition measurement tool which categorizes food by how fast it breaks down into glucose (blood sugar). This measurement is important for health because if a food breaks down too fast, it can cause spikes in blood sugar levels. This isn’t good because it will cause the pancreas to produce more insulin to help store the excess glucose as fat. The extra glucose and insulin can cause extra stress in the body which may lead to chemical imbalance. Having to many chemical imbalances in the body may lead to other health problems. The glycemic index is classified into three classes, low GI, medium GI and high GI. Food that is in the low and medium GI category is considered good for the body. Most fruits, vegetables and whole grains fall into the low and medium GI category. Junk food and food with little or no fiber usually fall into the high GI category.

Many nutritionists and food manufacturers have adopted the GI tool but they don’t realize that it has major flaws. The glycemic index was designed to measure the effect of a single food. Therefore, it is only useful if a person eats one food per meal. During a meal, most people eat more than one type of food. Depending on how much fiber, enzymes, protein and fat each food contains, it can drastically throw off its GI value. Another major flaw of the glycemic index is that it doesn’t accurately predict how much insulin the body will produce from eating the food. As a result, the GI tool can have strange results. For example, the GI value of baked potato is higher than fried potato. This doesn’t make sense because baked potato is healthier than fried potato. Because of these flaws, you shouldn’t rely on the glycemic index to make the decision, but use it as a tool to help you make better decision.

Healing With Reiki

Reiki is a Japanese holistic healing technique designed to heal the body by using energy. Reiki masters claim that anyone can use this healing technique as long as they are attuned to the universal life force. To become attuned to this spiritual energy, people need to go through a Reiki ceremony. This ceremony can only be perform by Reiki masters. During the attunement process, Reiki masters will introduce their students to the symbols of Reiki and attune their energy field to the universal energy of life. Once this ceremony is over, the students can start practicing Reiki to strengthen their energy healing skills.

Reiki practitioners heal their patients by placing their hands near specific areas of their patients’ body. The belief is that the universal energy of life will flow down their arms and out their hands to heal their patients. Reiki practitioners believe that this healing energy is intelligent; therefore, it will know what to do when it is inside their patients. The idea of energy being intelligent is not beyond reason. According to quantum physicists, at the quantum level (beyond the sub-atomic level) of reality particles react to one another. This proves that intelligence does exist at the subatomic level. Even better, they found out that intelligence increases as they dig deeper into these realms. Because these particles are nothing more than just energy, it is the energy that has intelligence. It is important to know that it is not the Reiki practitioner that is doing the healing but the universal energy of life. The Reiki practitioner is acting only as a medium to transfer this energy.

Reiki heals the body in a holistic way because it heals the body at the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual levels. During a Reiki session, the patient is usually lied down wearing comfortable clothing. Each time the Reiki practitioner transfer energy, his/her hands will usually stay still for a few minutes before moving to the next position. A Reiki session can last anywhere from 30 minutes to 90 minutes. People who had been through a Reiki session reported that they felt warmth or tingling in the area being healed.
